**HOW TO FUND YOUR NEW BOUTIQUE BUSINESS**

Today in my series about how to get started in your boutique, I think I should address most new boutique entrepreneur’s worry of MONEY. How do I get enough money to open? Or “How do I fund this boutique dream?” I get this question all the time and I want to give you easy and accessible ways to find money.

To be honest, since the crash of 2008, small business loans a traditional banks are hard to get. Generally you need to show 1-2 years of sales history and present a business plan- which for so many just isn’t where you are at! I want to give you alternatives in this article!

I also want you to know that Kickstarter is a TON of work and you need a massive network to make it work… and everyone that asks about government grants, really? Won’t it be so much more rewarding to figure this out on your own and not have to spend time researching and applying for grants? Maybe it’s just me, but I’m pretty scrappy and can always figure out a faster way to get myself going in business… I don’t like depending on others, or the government for that matter.

First, I want to tell you that you don’t need a ton of money to start! I think it’s best to start small to minimize risk and grow into a BIG boutique. You can always go UP!

Here’s my top 3 ways to be a scrappy, startup hungry entrepreneur that will fund your boutique business:

1. Save a set amount a week from your paycheck: Parkinson’s Law says, the demand upon a resource tends to expand to match the supply of the resource. Basically, if you make $500 a week, you’ll figure out how to expand your spending to spend $500 a week. Let’s say you immediately transfer $100 a week to a savings account. In just 2 months, you’ll have $800 saved to start your boutique. 4 months, $1600, which is a TON of money to buy inventory (and do everything else in a free or super resourceful way!). You can self-fund your boutique business this way and you’ll be more invested in it since you truly are your own backer!

2. Start with 75: I’m going to guess you have, or can borrow from a family member, $75, right? $75 is enough to buy about 12-15 pieces of jewelry/accessories from a wholesaler. Let’s say you open a free Facebook page or Instagram page to sell those pieces. You add in shipping to you and a bit for an envelope to ship the jewelry… then mark up the items times 3 (or more if you can!). The potential sales is about $225-$250 when you sell ALL of it!! Amazing right? 

Ok, go back to the jewelry vendor and only spend $75 again. You are still have $150 in your bank account and now, when you sell out the second order of $75, you’ll have $350 in your bank account. Maybe this time you spend $100 on items… sell that and you have $550 in your bank. Hopefully you are following this? My point is that you can turnover and turnover jewelry or small accessories inventory (think: one of a kind, limited edition pieces!) until you have enough saved up to purchase clothing and continue to expand. Imagine your a million dollar business telling the story to your team about how you started with $75 and a dream. THAT’S inspirational!

3. Sell things you own on Poshmark or Ebay or FB Marketplace: Seriously, you have things in your closet that will make you money right now! Have a cleaning afternoon and start listing your stuff! This will give you amazing practice in photographing, writing descriptions, pricing and talking to customers! All the things you need to be a great boutique owner. 

In general, $1000-2000 can be plenty to start an online boutique. Obviously if you want a mobile or back and mortar, you’ll need more! But, what if you started online, in a small way, discovered if you really like having a boutique and then went on to open a physical store? Starting online is a great way to dip your toes into the boutique world while you’re still at a 9-5, or have little kids at home!

Trouble finding new customers and getting them to BUY?

I've been hearing from so many of you who are just starting out in your boutique business. And I hear the same worries over and over. This week I'm going to be giving you my top tips for your concerns- a step by step to implement NOW to help you solve that problem.

First up, straight from Holly, a new boutique owner who emailed me: "The main thing I’m struggling with right now is getting the word out there about our new business and getting new traffic thru the door."

What I interpret that as is an issue with having new customers find you AND urging all customers to take action to come to the store (whether physical or online).

Holly, and others struggling with this issue, here are my top 3 tips for you. Please make sure you start to try these out TODAY so you can start to see the shift in your store ASAP:

1. Show up consistently and give a call to action: You may be doing one part of this, but I find that so many of you don't do the second-- a call to action. You really need to first and foremost be SHOWING UP for your business on social media, email, video, comments, text... as many of the ways you feel comfortable with every single day, multiple times per day. "But how do I even try to do that when I'm so busy with other things!?" Have a calendar for your day and stick to it or use a scheduling app like Buffer or Hootsuite to help you manage posts.

BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT PART>>> Give a call to action or make the ASK. I see it so often, boutique owners post one style or item and wonder why no one buys. Ask yourself, do they know HOW to buy? WHERE to buy? WHAT sizes it comes in? HOW it fits? WHEN it will get to their door? You are expecting your customers to read your mind and because they don't get the full story on what is next. Play this out for them and TELL THEM exactly where to go to buy and to do it now! Tell customers what to do and they will start doing it.

2. Create a sense of urgency: Triggers people. You get triggered to take action all the time without realizing it!! One of the reasons LuLaRoe has been so successful is because they create an insane amount of urgency saying "There's only 15 of this print!" And cue the customers going NUTS.

You can create a sense of urgency with time, quantity or price. Here's some examples for you to try today:

- TIME: "I'm pre-releasing this item to you, my VIPs, today. Tomorrow it will be released to the public, and I know it will sell out. Get your's quick!"

QUANTITY: "I can't get any more of this at my vendor and they are selling out faster than I planned. Get your's now!" or "I only have 4 of these in size small. If you are a small, you're going to want to take quick action to get this item."

- PRICE: "This weekend only, I'm releasing this item at $15 off the regular price, on Monday it will go back up to $55. Grab it at the low price now!"

3. Repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat.... and on and on. Again, you think you post something once and it doesn't sell, it's a bad item or the price is to high... STOP right there. That's not the problem. You assuming that after seeing something once everyone will jump on it is not typical human behavior. Only about 5% of products are people like, "OMG I HAVE TO HAVE THAT!" And even after that, only about 1% actually buy immediately after thinking that and seeing it one time. SO, repeat where you post, how you post, what you communicate. Let people visually register an item at least 7 times before you call it a rotten egg.

If you have been in my circle long enough, you've been around for a course launch of mine. For about 11 days, until the moment the doors close to the course, it's the ONLY thing I talk about. I do FB Lives about it, post about it, email you about it, run FB Ads about it, Insta-story it... I mean by the 10th day I'm blue in the face about it. But it works. I sell out every program I launch and the launches just get bigger and bigger as my audience grows over time. So REPEAT. OFTEN.

My Self Worth Isn't Defined by a Number

Can I tell you the truth? > I don’t care about how many followers I have. <

Meaning, I’m not actively concerned with the literal number that pops up on the screen when I open Facebook, Instagram or YouTube.

I feel like so many boutique owners get caught in the numbers trap. 

>> “I got 20 new followers! I’m feeling great!”

>> “I only have X amount of followers so I’m not doing well.” 

>> “I had a great day in sales so I feel really great about myself.” 

>> “I didn’t have a great week in sales so now I feel really bad about myself.”

Now don’t get confused. Do I think you should celebrate your wins? Of course. I totally get excited when I see I’ve hit a new 100 or 1000 level!

What I don’t love is your mindset linked to these numbers. Especially when it’s a matter of a few here and there. “This is happening”— so I’m going to define how I feel based on that.

Not only is it bad mindset practice, it’s also contributing to the up and down of your boutique! Remember, what we think, we create. And when we think about how bad things are… we actively are creating more bad things/times. It’s a TRAP.

YAY FOR MONDAY!!!

monday mindset hacks

From the time we are young, we’ve learned to start dreading Monday mornings around 5pm on Sunday night. “Sunday Funday” … “Working for the Weekend” and phrases like that just reinforce our deep hatred for the “first” day of the week.

WHYYY do we put so much stress into Mondays?? Monday didn’t ask for it!  And honestly, because we have had these chronically negative thoughts and emotions about it, it’s making everything just SO.MUCH.WORSE!!! 

**THIS IS A MINDSET ISSUE!!!**

What if you never fully realized what day of the week it really was? What if Monday was just another day of the week? What if we could just flip the switch an turn off this chronic thinking that Monday was ‘bad’?

I’d like to help you feel better about Mondays NOW, so here’s 3 tips for switching your MONDAY MINDSET!

  1. If you have to set your alarm, make it something soothing. Birds chirping, beautiful classical music or a fun song that makes you feel really good. When you hear the alarm, say “I’m so excited for today!” (even if you don’t believe it yet! you’ll get there!)
  2. During your morning routine, talk yourself into having that great day. Talk aloud or in your head saying things like, “My drive to work is going to be smooth and fun!” “I’m going to crush that meeting today!” “I have plenty of time to get everything I need done.” Again, even if you don’t totally believe it, we’ve GOT to start re-programming the chronic thinking that’s not been so helpful all these years. Trust me.. see what happens.
  3. If a moment of contrast occurs, like a kid spills their cereal on the floor, take a deep, calming breath, and laugh!!! Laughter will immediately raise your vibration, calm the energy of the room and help you see the situation in a more positive way. Every moment where we can ‘flip the switch’ like this is moving the momentum of your day towards ease and fun!

My Winter Mindset Hacks!

Do you feel like you are in a WINTER RUT? The cold weather or lack of sunshine is getting you down? Did you know there are ways to combat this?

In today's MINDSET MAKEOVER FOCUS, I want to talk about how the winter has been (maybe?) crushing you and simple solutions you can use!

I grew up in the Northeast and spent 33 years dealing with winters-- I get it. You are stuck inside, getting sick all the time and generally just feeling down from the lack of sunshine. Did you know that mindset work includes self care and treatment? Here are some of my best WINTER mindset tips for you to try:

1. Take extra vitamin D (you can probably take more than you think!). You can easily have a doctor run the test for you (I did!) and you'll see that most people who live in a place where winter hits are vitamin D deficient. When I was tested, my levels were so low that I was on 50,000 IUDs a week for 8 weeks! WOW right? Now, when I'm in the US during winter months, I'll take 10,000 a week, either all at once or over the course of the week. Check with your doctor to see if this might work for you. I know it made me drastically happier (results will vary)!

2. Try a guided meditation where you can envision being somewhere warm, or a happy place for you. Did you know that 20 minutes of meditation can give you the same level of mental energy as 3 hours of sleep?  THAT'S HUGE. Maybe meditation feels hard, or like your brain "won't stop"? Guess what? It's not supposed to! Meditation is basically breathing, something we rarely do deeply and with intention. Here's a quick 9 minute meditation I've been doing since 2006! 3. PEPPERMINT OIL! You guys, this stuff is like magic. If you aren't allergic to essential oils, I have personally found power in using them. My life changed when I started tapping into this plant power to help me change my state. Peppermint oil helped me heighten my overall vibration, calm my headaches (how I started using it) and generally gives me a pop of energy when I'm feeling low. The quality of essential oils is super important to their effectiveness. I learned this when the ones I bought at Whole Foods didn't work as well as the Young Living samples I got from a friend. {BOOST YOUR BOUTIQUE PODCAST} Episode 205: Why You MUST Pay Yourself

I'm going DEEPER with this whole 'YOU'VE GOT TO PAY YOURSELF" idea this week. Because really guys, you HAVE to start taking a salary from your boutique business... and this week I'm going to tell you WHY you MUST pay yourself! I feel like I'm trying to convince boutique-land to adjust from a very old martyrdom mindset, to a "money flows in and out of my business with ease and grace" mindset!

Here's my top 3 reasons why you really MUST start paying yourself:

1. We have to evolve into a modern relationship with money! Te internet has changed everything but our ideas haven't- we still get caught up in the 'work hard, make money' mentality. Let's get excited to unplug from the old and plug into the new concept of money!

2. Most flows as energy-- when you don't pay yourself, you won't be able to spend it and they cycle of in/out energy flow gets blocked.

3. We love to be rewarded as humans!! Even a small amount to allocate to yourself to get your nails done or a dinner out can feed the positive flow and give your brain a pat on the back for putting your all into the business!

How my yearly income became my monthly income...

I have something to confess: I made more money in the month of December 2017, than I did the entire year of 2015.

I love talking about making money. And as an entrepreneur, I’ve made a lot of money. But in 2015, I didn’t. I almost cried when I actually SAW what happened in the numbers.

You see, I started my mobile boutique The Fashion Truck in early 2011. It took off with massive success. I opened a brick and mortar version in 2013 and slowly had a downward spiral into the depths of my own mind. Turns out, I don’t really like sitting in a store (even though I had the cutest store ever!).

In 2015, I wrote my book, The Ultimate Boutique Handbook, and consequently became deeply depressed. My energy became really dull and super scattered- I was teaching illustration classes, doing styling and closet clean outs, hosting a massive food truck festival and, oh yeah, still running my 2 boutiques.

I WAS A HOT, DEPRESSED MESS.

Looking at my expenses from that year, I see $8.99 at Tedeschi over and over. You know what that was? The cheap bottles of Barefoot Chardonnay I’d drink to ‘feel better’ and ‘relax’. (Hint: they made my depression worse.)

In hindsight, I was running. Running quickly away from the fact that maybe this wasn’t my end-all-be-all dream life. Maybe I wouldn’t have the pack-n-play in the back room of the store for my future baby to take naps in while I re-did the window displays. Maybe I wouldn’t buy a house in the town I grew up in and live down the street from the store. Maybe what I wanted when I was 17 years old, wasn’t actually what the now 32 year old self wanted at all…

Believe it or not, my entire revenue in my business that year was a whopping  $38,993.77. Yep, the woman who was making well into six figures the previous years suddenly nose dived. I paid myself $12,066.66 (I’m not kidding, these numbers are directly from my profit and loss statement) and luckily I survived with the help of my now fiancé when it came to splitting the bills. 

But... SOMETHING HAD TO CHANGE.

Mid-2015 I decided to sign up for a group coaching program where the coach talked a lot about this thing called ‘mindset’. I had never heard of it before, but I was interested. I liked the idea of shifting thoughts, and a this point, I’d try anything.

I went hard and fast... instead of running away from my fears and problems, I ran at them with every technique I could find. Most of 2016, I even had my own mindset coach who pushed me on every tiny trigger that would come up.

By 2017, my entire life had COMPLETELY CHANGED. I was off the anxiety meds, sober, traveling the world, making money while I slept and utterly in love with my life.

Cut to December 2017 when my revenue was $45,073.51…FOR THE MONTH.

What's shocking to me is that once I set my mind to change, it took me about 2 years to go 360. Only 2 years!

It’s time I teach this to you. Mindset has become the most important topic I teach in 2018.

Mindset is the first 3 weeks of my big Six Figure Blueprint program. I see the women in Six Figure Blueprint that have gone full force into it make the most incredible changes- no joke. I flew to Sedona to meditate in powerful vortexes, have shaman healings, go to Native American medicine wheels and dive even deeper into the work I'm here on this planet to do. I took up Kundalini yoga and recorded transformational meditation tracks for my membership site.

Whatever you believe, mindset work is the deepest level of business training you can study. It's a lifelong journey of self love. "Where there's self love, there's no fear. And where there's no fear, there's no anger." Or what I like to say... no worry.

I’m in this interesting place in my business… maybe you can relate?

I’m growing at a fast rate, but I still have big goals and a good amount of ‘work’ to be doing each day/week. I really try to take days off... but I LOVE my work and it can be tough.

But about every 4 weeks, and yes, it’s totally a ‘moon cycle thing’ (TMI)… I get really tired. Like, I don’t want to do anything but sit around and read articles on the internet and watch a movie or two.

Problem is, I’ve started this freight train of a business rolling down the track… and if I stop, it stops. Well, kind of. It used to- but not anymore!
 

Yesterday I was on a group coaching call with Danielle LaPorte as the guest coach. If you haven’t heard of this NY Times Bestselling author, you should look her up. Most recently, she wrote a book called “White Hot Truth,” and she started out 8 years ago as a business coach. So much of what she said on yesterday’s call was amazing. But one thing stuck out at me…

“You can win by being the most consistent. But consistency isn’t glamorous.”

So many of us start businesses with the hope, dream and wish of it being easy, making us tons of money and then being able to retire at 45. (Well, maybe that’s just me… I bet you have goals though, right?)

What if you knew you could get to all of those goals just by being consistent? Consistently learning, consistency posting, consistently responding to customers, consistently keeping expenses low… you see where I’m going with this yeah?

Looking back at the past 7 years, I know the times when I haven’t been consistent with my intention and action is when I’ve seen my income go down. Only recently have I learned that I need protection for myself and my business to allow me to savor in the slow days I really need. I also have learned that the most valuable thing is setting up systems for when I need a break.

Currently I can slow down, because I have:

  • Great Facebook Live videos!
  • Holly scheduling out content on the FB biz page & group!
  • Holly answering client emails that don’t need my attention!
  • Automated emails and systems on the back end that just run! 

Have you thought about how you can put automation and help into place for when you need to slow down? 

TO TRY: Right now, write down at least 3 ways you can get help or schedule automation into your business. Set the intention that you will have these completed over the next 2-4 months.
