We have a problem in the boutique industry. 

We have a problem in the boutique industry. 

And I see it popping up a lot in The Fashion Truck Tribe

Women get excited about selling fashion. They do all the legwork to order merchandise, set up their store, their website and social media accounts.

And then 2-6-52 weeks later, they find me. Talking about how to solve the problems they’re having.

Somewhere in that time period, they send me an email or post in The Fashion Truck Tribe. The post goes a little like this:

“I need your help!!!! I opened a store and I have no sales. Please tell me what to do. Critique my website. Tell me what’s wrong… why do I have no sales (besides my mom and sister). HELP!”

I hear you. You need ideas. You need to know WHY this is happening to you. You need to be saved. 

My quick answer… it’s happening FOR YOU. For you to learn whatever lesson you need to learn.

Maybe it’s about working on your mindset (this is most women!)… or learning proper online marketing strategies… or you need a cheerleader.

In 2011, when I wanted to start The Fashion Truck, none of this existed. There were 1-2 other trucks I could find. There were no boutique communities in Facebook Groups, there were no books and certainly no mentors.

That’s why I’m here. To help solve the problems you are having… similar to ones I had when I opened. And problems I’ve had over the past 7 years as I was growing, shifting and changing business models.

80% of boutiques fail in the first 3 years. Why? 3 reasons: 1. They run out of money, 2. The owners have a lack of education and 3. Not outshining the competition.

You’re investment in education will help you NOT run out of money and show up as a shiny boutique owner who customers love. But buying clothes and putting up a website isn’t going to cut it anymore… it’s just not enough.

And you need to know… there’s going to be a lot of free information out there. But if you REALLY want to be saved… you might need to dig deeper inside yourself. Or you might need to pay for help.

Over the past 2 and a half years, I’ve invested close to $25,000 in courses, coaches, trainings and events. Yep, that’s like buying a CAR! Have I made that money back? Yep— I’ve about 6x that investment just this year alone.

Why did I invest so much? Because LEARNING. When you don’t know WHY you are struggling you need to know one thing… you aren’t going to find the answer in a day, in a post or in an email. 

I want to help all of you who reach out… but I’m just ONE person. And I can’t see inside your heart, head and daily business ins and outs. Even if you do tell me your backstory or where you are at now, maybe I can point you in a good direction, but most likely, you need to do the real work, invest the time to do it, and sometimes even invest the money to learn what you need to learn in this moment in time.

My best advice for you: Look inside yourself, hard. Have you REALLY given it your all to sell your heart out? Are you TRULY being consistent with your actions in your marketing? Have you seen all the options I offer from $9.99 and up?

I believe in you... probably more than you believe in yourself. I know you can have a successful boutique you work in full time and make a full, living salary.

I know because I've done it.

Do You Need A Business Partner?

This past weekend I watched a video of myself from 2014. Talk about having a pile of opposition showing up all over my face.

I looked terribledepressed, like I wasn't even there... straight up dead behind the eyesSeriously, look at the screenshots from my videos!

I was 3 years into my business and I had what everyone on the outside saw as major success. On the inside I was falling apart. In those 3 years I had crashed my first fashion truck (my business), developed crippling reactive arthritis for 3 months where I could barely walk or move, was chained to my desk all day, everyday and felt like my business was at a total stand still. 

On top of it, I was SO worried ALL.THE.TIME. about everything- money, customers, social media, buying, money, family, my relationship, what the hell I was doing with my life. Seriously, to have spent three years riding the highs and lows of my business had made me a complete wreck. Can't you see it in my face?

I spent much of 2014 depressed and overwhelmed. I didn't know how I had gotten to that place, but it sucked.

I felt alone in my business and wanted to take a vacation from my life and run away.

I wish in that time, I had someone to help me.

My family, my boyfriend with a business degree, my friends... they're all amazing listeners but the real deal is that they aren't business consultants, they're not life coaches... and they just didn't understand what being a boutique owner felt like.

In that time, I needed someone to simultaneously lift my spirit up, tell me how to adjust my business to keep hitting my numbers and be my ally to pull me out of the lonely, overwhelmed situation I was in.

In 2015 I ended up on a woman's email list who sent emails that resonated with me. I loved her message, I listened to her audios and felt in my heart that she was the one who could help me figure out what I was doing with my life. 

I signed up with her as my coach and wow, how quickly my life changed. Changed in the best ways... I got happier, I felt lighter and a year and a half later I'm the happiest and most creative I've ever been in my life.

I Had to Get Kicked Out to Rise Up

On Monday, six years ago, I was laid off from my $100k/year job as the Accessories Merchant for Delia's. I had just turned 28 and had worked my ass off in corporate retail for the past 7 years.

The first day "off" I remember crying a lot, being mad, sad and just plain exhausted at the emotional rollercoaster working a corporate job had been. I was tested to my limits and always come out on top. Why now, when perhaps I could have some relief from the hustle and bustle, did I feel empty and upset?

THE CORPORATE WORLD HAD FAILED ME.

I was SO good at taking "the path"... I got high honors in high school, went to a top-tier northeast University and got an amazing job 14 days after graduation. I was smart and savvy in corporate so I was quickly promoted and promoted again. By the time I moved to NYC, I knew I was bound to be a Vice President of some retail business in 5-10 years.

But no, I was asked to leave. After only 90 days on the job. The Universe presented an assignment I didn't realize I was ready for- my OWN business.

I had to get kicked out to rise up. The decision to leave corporate had to be made for me, because I feared leaving on my own.

6 months later I drove out of my parents driveway with The Fashion Truck. If I knew where getting laid off would take me, I bet those first days and weeks crying in my apartment on 2nd Avenue would have been easier.

Or would I have been terrified at the amount of work and push I would need to grow over the past 6 years?

Who knows? 

What I do know is that everything happens for a reason, and that our path in life is much longer and bigger than we can see today.

We have to keep showing up for life, even when it feels hard.

Start working SMARTER, not HARDER.

You might call me a creep, but I don't care. Part of being a incredible business owner is watching the trends and seeing where to make effective change.

And one trend I see is a heck of alot of wasted time.

Having traveled extensively, I honestly think it's an American "thing". We like to appear busy so people think we are 'working hard' and we are applauded for that over and over. We say we are "great at multi-tasking and time management," but core pieces of our business aren't up-to-date or even under construction.

How long can you go on telling yourself that you are so busy, have great time management and are able to grow your business? 

Remember the other day when I talked about the difference between an entrepreneur and a business owner (via email and on a Facebook Live video)? 

Let me break it down even more so you can further identify where you stand in your business:

Entrepreneurs:

  • Stay busy with the busy work
  • Look only at this week's sales
  • Focus on doing "the best I can with what I have"
  • Don't have vision past this month
  • Never take vacation or have time off
  • Worried about money
  • Just figuring it out as you go
  • Decision making triggers fear


Small business owners:

  • Focus on strategy
  • Look where to cut costs
  • Plan vacations and time off often
  • Delegate work to assistants

Why I burned the boats {and you should too!}

I just finished up my taxes for 2015.


What I realized going through the numbers was that 2015 was a really hard year for me. 

As I looked through the charges on my card, my income, what I spent money on… I was a little shocked.

Not only was it my lowest income year ever as an adult, it was the first year I ever spent money on personal development. I had basically negative money and spent the majority of the money I made on investments in MYSELF. (I actually can’t believe I’m publicly talking about this…)

WHY DID I DO THAT?
Because I was stuck. 
I couldn’t do it by myself anymore.
I was struggling.
I didn’t know what was wrong with me, with my business.
I was tired.
I wanted more.
I couldn’t deal.
I knew it was the tipping point…
And my family, friends, my poor boyfriend—they just couldn’t help me. 
They didn’t know how to help me.
They saw I was down, depressed even, and didn’t know what could get the funk out.

You see, in 2013, I started teaching a monthly webinar to mobile retailers. I got to use my 7 years of retail expertise to teach a higher level of running a retail business— AND I LOVED IT. Every freaking minute of it. I was psyched when someone wanted to consult with me 1:1 and usually stayed on the phone with them longer than the 1 hour allotted time. (If you talk with me these days, you know I do that still sometimes!)

That pull of teaching was calling me last year. I knew I was meant for more than where I was, and I couldn’t quite put my finger on how, when, who… I didn’t have a clue what was next. I just knew I loved teaching, helping women run their businesses. Give them the good, bad and the ugly I had experienced myself.

I knew my life had to stop the crappy pattern it was in, and I was fully convinced that scraping together the money I had to do it was the answer.

So I bit the bullet and decided to “burn the boats” as they say. I spent $5500 on my first group coaching program. I was obsessed with the women who was running it and it became a non-negotiable for me to sign up for the program quickly after I listened to her teleclasses.

What came out of me burning the boats?

  • More money coming in from places I never expected
  • A solid relationship with a fantastic coach who pushed me and nurtured me at exactly the times that I needed it

I Heart Mondays! {FOR REAL}

This morning I woke up early to check out a Spin studio in the town we are staying in (we've started our traveling adventures!!). The place had great reviews and I have my spin shoes with me so I thought I'd try!

As I was setting up the bike, I was having trouble clipping my shoes into the pedals (it was the right size clip- I double checked!). So I asked the instructor if she could just guide my feet into the right place.

I said: "I just haven't been to a Spin class in awhile. And I think these bikes are different than the ones I've been on before."

She said: "It's Monday. Everything is harder on a Monday."

I thought: "WHAT? Well that's a crap story that you probably should let go of!"

It set this weird tone up for me and during the class, she kept referring to the idea that "Monday is hard" "Let's get Monday going!"

All I could think was STOP BLAMING MONDAY. Poor freaking Monday has nothing to do with how I'm going to perform in this class. And honestly, you making it the enemy is NOT INSPIRING at all.

It doesn't matter what day of the week it is- I FLOW EVERYDAY. PERIOD.

When you're a small business owner, everyday is important. And frankly, everyday is equal.

When you choose to flow, choose to make everyday really great for you and your life, IT IS!

The freedom, living life on your own terms, showing up for the amazing business you've created--- this is what I do, and what I teach my clients to do.

Yes, resistance can come up. People wanting things from you, get in your way. The urge to help everyone in your path is a real life issue you need to deal with.

But at the end of the day:

  • YOU CHOOSE HOW YOU FEEL.
  • YOU HAVE CONTROL OVER YOUR EMOTIONS.
  • YOU DECIDE WHAT FLOW IS TO YOU.
  • YOU GET TO CREATE YOUR OWN REALITY.


So let's all stop blaming days of the week for how we feel. Because we can absolutely create the flow we desire no matter what day or time it is!
