**HOW TO FUND YOUR NEW BOUTIQUE BUSINESS**

Today in my series about how to get started in your boutique, I think I should address most new boutique entrepreneur’s worry of MONEY. How do I get enough money to open? Or “How do I fund this boutique dream?” I get this question all the time and I want to give you easy and accessible ways to find money.

boutique (2).png

To be honest, since the crash of 2008, small business loans a traditional banks are hard to get. Generally you need to show 1-2 years of sales history and present a business plan- which for so many just isn’t where you are at! I want to give you alternatives in this article!

I also want you to know that Kickstarter is a TON of work and you need a massive network to make it work… and everyone that asks about government grants, really? Won’t it be so much more rewarding to figure this out on your own and not have to spend time researching and applying for grants? Maybe it’s just me, but I’m pretty scrappy and can always figure out a faster way to get myself going in business… I don’t like depending on others, or the government for that matter.

First, I want to tell you that you don’t need a ton of money to start! I think it’s best to start small to minimize risk and grow into a BIG boutique. You can always go UP!

Here’s my top 3 ways to be a scrappy, startup hungry entrepreneur that will fund your boutique business:

1. Save a set amount a week from your paycheck: Parkinson’s Law says, the demand upon a resource tends to expand to match the supply of the resource. Basically, if you make $500 a week, you’ll figure out how to expand your spending to spend $500 a week. Let’s say you immediately transfer $100 a week to a savings account. In just 2 months, you’ll have $800 saved to start your boutique. 4 months, $1600, which is a TON of money to buy inventory (and do everything else in a free or super resourceful way!). You can self-fund your boutique business this way and you’ll be more invested in it since you truly are your own backer!

2. Start with 75: I’m going to guess you have, or can borrow from a family member, $75, right? $75 is enough to buy about 12-15 pieces of jewelry/accessories from a wholesaler. Let’s say you open a free Facebook page or Instagram page to sell those pieces. You add in shipping to you and a bit for an envelope to ship the jewelry… then mark up the items times 3 (or more if you can!). The potential sales is about $225-$250 when you sell ALL of it!! Amazing right?

Ok, go back to the jewelry vendor and only spend $75 again. You are still have $150 in your bank account and now, when you sell out the second order of $75, you’ll have $350 in your bank account. Maybe this time you spend $100 on items… sell that and you have $550 in your bank. Hopefully you are following this? My point is that you can turnover and turnover jewelry or small accessories inventory (think: one of a kind, limited edition pieces!) until you have enough saved up to purchase clothing and continue to expand. Imagine your a million dollar business telling the story to your team about how you started with $75 and a dream. THAT’S inspirational!

3. Sell things you own on Poshmark or Ebay or FB Marketplace: Seriously, you have things in your closet that will make you money right now! Have a cleaning afternoon and start listing your stuff! This will give you amazing practice in photographing, writing descriptions, pricing and talking to customers! All the things you need to be a great boutique owner.

In general, $1000-2000 can be plenty to start an online boutique. Obviously if you want a mobile or back and mortar, you’ll need more! But, what if you started online, in a small way, discovered if you really like having a boutique and then went on to open a physical store? Starting online is a great way to dip your toes into the boutique world while you’re still at a 9-5, or have little kids at home!

My Self Worth Isn't Defined by a Number

Can I tell you the truth? > I don’t care about how many followers I have. <

My WInter mindset hacks (3).png

Meaning, I’m not actively concerned with the literal number that pops up on the screen when I open Facebook, Instagram or YouTube.

I feel like so many boutique owners get caught in the numbers trap.

>> “I got 20 new followers! I’m feeling great!”

>> “I only have X amount of followers so I’m not doing well.”

>> “I had a great day in sales so I feel really great about myself.”

>> “I didn’t have a great week in sales so now I feel really bad about myself.”

Now don’t get confused. Do I think you should celebrate your wins? Of course. I totally get excited when I see I’ve hit a new 100 or 1000 level!

What I don’t love is your mindset linked to these numbers. Especially when it’s a matter of a few here and there. “This is happening”— so I’m going to define how I feel based on that.

Not only is it bad mindset practice, it’s also contributing to the up and down of your boutique! Remember, what we think, we create. And when we think about how bad things are… we actively are creating more bad things/times. It’s a TRAP.

Do you feel your mood and self worth being defined by the numbers you see on the screen, in your bank account or even on the scale?? We’ve GOT to fix this (maybe not all at once) ASAP! The reason your growth is inconsistent is because your mindset is inconsistent.

Ready to change this? I’m ready for you to also! During the month of April, I’m leading a one of a kind LIVE course for women who are ready to transform in a major way. I’d love to see you there! Here’s the details: www.RetailMindsetMakeover.com

{BOOST YOUR BOUTIQUE PODCAST} Episode 205: Why You MUST Pay Yourself

I'm going DEEPER with this whole 'YOU'VE GOT TO PAY YOURSELF" idea this week. Because really guys, you HAVE to start taking a salary from your boutique business... and this week I'm going to tell you WHY you MUST pay yourself! I feel like I'm trying to convince boutique-land to adjust from a very old martyrdom mindset, to a "money flows in and out of my business with ease and grace" mindset!

Here's my top 3 reasons why you really MUST start paying yourself:

1. We have to evolve into a modern relationship with money! Te internet has changed everything but our ideas haven't- we still get caught up in the 'work hard, make money' mentality. Let's get excited to unplug from the old and plug into the new concept of money!

2. Most flows as energy-- when you don't pay yourself, you won't be able to spend it and they cycle of in/out energy flow gets blocked.

3. We love to be rewarded as humans!! Even a small amount to allocate to yourself to get your nails done or a dinner out can feed the positive flow and give your brain a pat on the back for putting your all into the business!

How my yearly income became my monthly income...

How my yearly income became my monthly income...

I have something to confess: I made more money in the month of December 2017, than I did the entire year of 2015.

I love talking about making money. And as an entrepreneur, I’ve made a lot of money. But in 2015, I didn’t. I almost cried when I actually SAW what happened in the numbers.

You see, I started my mobile boutique The Fashion Truck in early 2011. It took off with massive success. I opened a brick and mortar version in 2013 and slowly had a downward spiral into the depths of my own mind. Turns out, I don’t really like sitting in a store (even though I had the cutest store ever!).

In 2015, I wrote my book, The Ultimate Boutique Handbook, and consequently became deeply depressed. My energy became really dull and super scattered- I was teaching illustration classes, doing styling and closet clean outs, hosting a massive food truck festival and, oh yeah, still running my 2 boutiques.

I WAS A HOT, DEPRESSED MESS.

Looking at my expenses from that year, I see $8.99 at Tedeschi over and over. You know what that was? The cheap bottles of Barefoot Chardonnay I’d drink to ‘feel better’ and ‘relax’. (Hint: they made my depression worse.)

In hindsight, I was running. Running quickly away from the fact that maybe this wasn’t my end-all-be-all dream life. Maybe I wouldn’t have the pack-n-play in the back room of the store for my future baby to take naps in while I re-did the window displays. Maybe I wouldn’t buy a house in the town I grew up in and live down the street from the store. Maybe what I wanted when I was 17 years old, wasn’t actually what the now 32 year old self wanted at all…

Believe it or not, my entire revenue in my business that year was a whopping  $38,993.77. Yep, the woman who was making well into six figures the previous years suddenly nose dived. I paid myself $12,066.66 (I’m not kidding, these numbers are directly from my profit and loss statement) and luckily I survived with the help of my now fiancé when it came to splitting the bills.

But... SOMETHING HAD TO CHANGE.

Mid-2015 I decided to sign up for a group coaching program where the coach talked a lot about this thing called ‘mindset’. I had never heard of it before, but I was interested. I liked the idea of shifting thoughts, and a this point, I’d try anything.

I went hard and fast... instead of running away from my fears and problems, I ran at them with every technique I could find. Most of 2016, I even had my own mindset coach who pushed me on every tiny trigger that would come up.

By 2017, my entire life had COMPLETELY CHANGED. I was off the anxiety meds, sober, traveling the world, making money while I slept and utterly in love with my life.

Cut to December 2017 when my revenue was $45,073.51…FOR THE MONTH.

What's shocking to me is that once I set my mind to change, it took me about 2 years to go 360. Only 2 years!

It’s time I teach this to you. Mindset has become the most important topic I teach in 2018.

Mindset is the first 3 weeks of my big Six Figure Blueprint program. I see the women in Six Figure Blueprint that have gone full force into it make the most incredible changes- no joke. Hitting goals before the end of the month (then beating it by $3000 in the last 3 days!), hiring housekeepers and nannies, letting go of past beliefs that held them back in their new boutique business, BEING HAPPIER and seeing that their lives CAN be AWESOME while running their businesses…

I need you to get in on this. ASAP. I’m over seeing the “mindset stuff” pop up in The Fashion Truck Tribe, and I bet you’re over it yourself. I’ve decided to give you a taste of my second book and the EXACT steps I took to transform my life in a 4 week Bootcamp-style course called the Retail Mindset Makeover.

In 2017, I did a ton of trainings on my spiritual side: I got Reiki level 2 certified, I became a May Cause Miracles facilitator and completed my Spiritual Teacher Training with Gabby Bernstein's Spirit Junkie Masterclass. I flew to Sedona to meditate in powerful vortexes, have shaman healings, go to Native American medicine wheels and dive even deeper into the work I'm here on this planet to do. I took up Kundalini yoga and recorded transformational meditation tracks for my membership site.

Whatever you believe, mindset work is the deepest level of business training you can study. It's a lifelong journey of self love. "Where there's self love, there's no fear. And where there's no fear, there's no anger." Or what I like to say... no worry.

I'm ready to teach you how to tame your worry, master your mind and create more peace inside you and your business.

Does that sound like something you'd like in your life?

The 4 week course will open for registration on March 22. It will be the only time I teach this course LIVE and IN PERSON with you.

Want your boutique to blow up? (like in the awesome way...)

Back in May, my best friend said to me, “Emily, you aren’t allowed to act surprised when your business becomes massive in a few months. You just need to be excited.” She said that because honestly, when I start a business, I go all in. There is no ‘Plan B’, no savings to fall back on and no one to do it for me.

I am really proud to say that I’ve now started and ramped 2 businesses up to 6-figures in under 2 years time; because as of early September, this business officially hit 6-figures in revenue for the year.

And no, I’m not surprised. I expect to be successful.

This week I heard, “Your business has blown up!” and all I have to say is, “Yes! I planned it to blow up!” (oh… and you can blow up too if you decide you want to!)

I have notebooks on notebooks of affirmations, plans of my future life to come true (lots have already!), journaled feelings and experiences; hundreds of hours of books on success on Audible, Abraham Hicks on YouTube and with my own coaches on calls.

I 100% manifested my business to look exactly like it does today back in late December.

See, if you haven’t caught on yet, now’s a good time to use my business as an example for yourself. Mindset is 90% of business, period.

You might want to believe that learning new SEO for your website will gain you more traffic, or posting more on social media will get you more sales, or there is some missing clue about Instagram that will get you more followers. That’s not the answer to you making more money, it’s just not.

Mindset comes first, and then the action is inspired from it.

With women who are struggling in their boutique, I clearly see 3 key factors missing with their mindset:

1. Obsession: You HAVE TO BE OBSESSED with your business. No, not obsessed with worrying about how much money you will make this month.Obsessed with helping your people, obsessed with making them happy, obsessed with listening to them, obsessed with trying new things to see what works.

If you haven’t noticed, I’m obsessed with you. You ask questions in The Fashion Truck Tribe, and I make podcasts to answer. You talk about being worried about money, I do a live stream about money mindset. You need a low priced, easy access way to learn how to run your boutique better, I create the Boutique Elite Membership. I am always listening to what you need and responding.

The next book I’m writing all about mindset for boutique owners, also comes from my obsession. It’s so clearly in my path to write this book that I dreamt the cover one night in July. I woke up and feverishly sketched it in a notebook. I sent that sketch to my photographer… and last week on the biggest high-end shopping street in Paris, we shot that dream in real life. My body was vibrating as she took the photos. Talk about your dreams becoming reality. My dreams are my reality, literally.

2. Expectation: And not false expectations. A deep, resonating belief that your life is the one you’ve been dreaming of. The idea that no matter what has happened in your life and business until now— it can take a massive 180 in the opposite direction if you decide you want it to.

I teach about affirmations and positive mindset as a way to create a new life for yourself. At first, it can feel fake. That’s where most women drop off. They don’t really believe what I’m talking about, and they don’t see it immediately show up… so they drop the practice.

Many of the women in this round of Six Figure Blueprint stuck it out (and I’m super proud of them!!!) The first 3 weeks are 100% mindset work, and it can feel icky and weird to change everything you thought was true about money and success into a new paradigm… until 4-6 weeks in (where we are now), that this starts to happen: (these are actual screenshots from our private Facebook group!)

I can’t make this stuff up.

3. Intuition: Do you trust yourself? No, like when that little voice says: “do this!” Do you listen? So many of us have learned to use logic as the deciding factor in decision making. Did you know that recently Harvard Business School conducted a study that said the most successful CEOs base decisions on their intuition, even if it goes against all logic?

I’ve been re-learning to tap into my intuition in a deep way this year.

Last Memorial Day (2016), I called a friend livid about business practices I was hearing about in the direct selling fashion world. It went against all my retail business experience and because I’m so passionate about helping women entrepreneurs succeed, I was angry to my core. Did I do anything about it? No… because I didn’t listen to my intuition to do something.

This May 2017 I had lunch with a colleague and she said to me, “Are you helping those direct selling ladies? Because they need you.” My gut had been saying this for awhile, and the Universe clearly was sending a message via my friend for me to wake up and do something!

A day later I did one of my most watched Facebook Lives (over 15k views as of me writing this!) and two weeks later I had my highest revenue weekend to that point in time

Just imagine how many more women I could have helped if I listened to my gut last year?

I think I’ve realized I’m probably never going to be the coach that enjoys talking about Shopify apps, or Instagram engagement. Because I’m not convinced that it’s the answer to your boutique’s success.

Ready to make the money you dream about?

“I can buy anything I want.”

That saying started it all. Started me on this journey from worrying about my debit card working in line at the grocery store, to booking trains and apartments around Europe.

You see, in 2015, I was struggling. My boutiques had been doing incredible for 4 straight years. But suddenly, I wasn’t doing great. I was unhappy, overworked, depressed and because of all that, not making much money anymore. I saw a HUGE decrease in sales all of a sudden.

I went from #SixFigureSuccess to worried about literally every penny. It kept me up at night. I was scared to open my banking app because I hated seeing it with $8.00 in it. I would make a bunch of money, pay all the bills, and then have just enough to get groceries.

Was it the economy? Was it a snowy winter? Was it women just not wanting to shop?

Nope. It was me.

I was a hot mess who had hit a wall.

To be honest with you, I ran on straight adrenaline in the first 3 years of my business. Magazines called for stories and photos, customers raved about my product, and I felt like I was on massive high all the time. And after 3 years, inside I felt like… “This is great, but what is next?” and “Gosh, I’m pooped.”

While I looked for answers and was forced to rest, my bank account got a bit hairy.

Until I was introduced to this thing called Money Mindset.

All of us have it, and we’re either living in one of 2 money mindset states, abundance or lack. And the energy we feed into that state is how our outside world shows up. Because I was worried about money, I had little money. (No, not the other way around!)

I was living in a state of lack, constantly talking about how I didn’t have enough, I didn’t know how I was ever going to make the next sale and always focused on how my bank account was low.

Most women I work with think it goes the other way: When they have no money, they worry about money.

But really, think about it… have you seen that when you are worried about money is when THE worst things happen. A parking ticket, unexpected bills, some random thing you owe money to all of a sudden? Yes! It’s like ‘waking up on the wrong side of the bed’ (or bank!) and as the day goes on, it just gets worse. Bad money days can last a lifetime.

Most likely you have thoughts about money (a “money story”) that were stuck in your head a longggg time ago. And because you haven’t realized or been told (hi!) yet that you have a superpower to change those thoughts, they simply haven’t changed.

What I need you to know is that YOU CAN CHANGE THE TRAJECTORY OF YOUR MONEY STORY. I did it, and you can too.

When I was introduced to this idea, I thought it was bullsh*t. 2 years later I’m riding high as a kite on my fab money mindset. So yeah, I was dead wrongFixing my money story allowed me to open up to find my next path in life and has lead me down the rabbit hole of trying to help you!

You need to know that there is no level of Facebook or sales training that will work when you have a mindset of lack.

But what happens when you face the crappy money mindset and re-organize the energy to one of abundance (even if it feels fake at first) is things start to change. Orders start coming in, random emails from new customers, or big opportunities show up for you.

Again, I know because this has been my past 2 years. The abundant opportunities continue to show up over and over in bigger and better ways. Last month, we were upgraded to a $900 a night 5-start hotel suite in Bath, England just because. SERIOUSLY. I can’t make this stuff up!

If you aren’t in one of my programs yet, let’s start here. I need you to stop talking smack about not having money. What you think about you create… so want to become a powerful creator?

Last July > This July

Last July, I was sitting on this bed, staring at my computer and crying my eyes out.

It was supposed to be a fun holiday vacation, but I all I could think about was how I had no money. How I had no hope and how the hell I got myself into this situation.

My brick and mortar business was struggling, I had panic attacks every time I was in my mobile business... and as for the 3 other businesses I had running--- well, they were the ones paying the bills. I was tired, sad and in hindsight, I'd say I was depressed.

I knew I had to make a change-- and the change was certainly not to go back to a typical 9-5 job.

A month before this, I had started listening to an audio training series from a woman, also named Emily.

She had this incredible outlook on life and business... there were quotables inside the trainings, and I had taken notes on notes trying to figure out what her secret sauce was.

See, I was the type of person who always said, "I can figure this out, I don't need help."

But at this point, I was so deep into my entrepreneurial life, I wasn't quite sure how to figure this out myself. And sure, these audio trainings we amazing-- inspiring and with instruction-- but I realized that I couldn't replace a freebie training series with a true course with a real person to help me.

And that's when I gave in. Well, with a little help.

Emily was selling a 3 month course at the end of the audio training. I looked at the sign up page for the course probably a thousand times, continuously telling myself I couldn't afford it. But deep down, I knew I needed to sign up soooo badly. Like THIS was THE thing that would change my life. If I didn't take this risk, I'd continue along my path of depression.

I tried to sell some things, ask my sister to use her credit card, and moved some bits of money around. But it still wasn't enough for the first payment.

My boyfriend Greg had seen how much I would light up listening to the trainings, and that I had this glimmer of hope when I spoke about signing up for the course.

The day I was sitting on the bed crying, he came in and asked what was wrong. It was the last day to sign up, and I couldn't because I didn't have the money.

He left... and in less than 2 minutes, he came back with his credit card. Passing it to me, he said "Use this to sign up and you can pay me back when you can."

I almost didn't take it... Who was I to be using his money? This was admitting defeat in the biggest sense possible. I would never ask a man to pay for something like this. I was taught that a woman should take care of herself.

I shut down the voices running through my head and took the card. As soon as I got the confirmation for the course sign up, I felt a rush of relief come over my body. I knew that I was a good worker, I could get things done. And now I had an expert telling me exactly what to do to change my life for the better.

I was saved.

That was one year ago.

Since then it's been a whirlwind:
- I closed my brick and mortar store.
- I sold my mobile business!
- I started a business consulting business!
- I've been completely booked since I started consulting. And my clients are getting insanely positive results in their lives and businesses!
- I launched 2 new programs, a mastermind and intensives.
- I spent the winter in Antigua, a week in Paris (where I had my dream photoshoot!) and am about to travel around the world for the next couple of years.
- I've worked (and continue to work) with the top coaches in the world in business, mindset, public speaking, personal development and internet marketing.

And personally:
- My relationship with Greg gets deeper everyday.
- My mom and I are closer than ever before.
- My dad has a new level of respect for me as a business woman.
- I have ah-mazing new business besties all over the world. (And my super sweetie long time besties are reaping the benefits of my enhanced personal development, making continual improvements in their lives!)
- I feel happy, safe, inspired and vibrationally aligned every single day.
- I live with a greater sense of purpose and clarity than I ever have before.

I live with a passion for not only MY dreams, but I'm obsessed with my CLIENT'S goals and dreams. I have seen so much transformation in my own life, I can't help but be addicted to seeing them transform as well.

Being successful in life and business REQUIRES being vulnerable.

If I hadn't gotten over myself and what my mind was telling me to keep me safe, I absolutely wouldn't be where I am today.

I had to take the risk, I had to ask for help, and I had to be willing to put myself into situations that were uncomfortable (trust me, there were more than just in this letter!).

There are 174 days left in 2016.

How are you going to choose to be vulnerable?

Are you willing to get uncomfortable for the sake of success, the chance to live a fantastic life full of every desire your business can afford you?

I believe in you and I'm obsessed with you achieving your dreams and goals!

Here's to living your life full of everything you desire!

Emily

My $35,000 Plan

Comment

My $35,000 Plan

I only watch very specific television shows, and one of my favorites lately is ‘The Grinder’ on Fox. Rob Lowe (total hottie!) plays an actor who for many years was a famous TV lawyer, and now he’s returned home and works at his family’s real life law firm in Idaho. He never passed the bar, but his TV show antics seem to always work in real life.

Anyhow, the episode I watched last week was all about how he decided that to be able to solve the BIG case, he needed to get wrapped up in a side story. That the ‘side story’ would be able to distract him enough so he could connect the dots and figure out how to work the angles on the BIG case.

Of course this got me thinking about how my mindset practice is my FOREVER side story, helping me solve the issues that come up while running my coaching business. I spend between 1-4 hours A DAY on journaling, tapping, drowning myself in audios and reading. I’ve unlocked blocks I didn’t know I had, solved problems in my relationships with others, and gotten the clues to what’s holding me back from the next HUGE levels in my business (I hit $35k this month already. $40k is July’s goal!!)…

And now I’m helping others do the same. Last week on a call with a client, she said “I spoke to a total ideal client, but she probably can’t afford my $4,000 rates.” I immediately stopped her… 1. Because her rate is $5,000… and 2. Because she was putting her own limiting beliefs about money onto this woman she had talked to for 30 minutes.

I gave her the assignment to write down all the reasons she is capable of charging $5,000 and why someone would pay her $5,000. Guess what? Two days later she signed a $5,000 client!

In business, a person’s side story should ALWAYS be mindset work. Lots to do, do the mindset work first. Got nothing to do, do some mindset work.

So many coaches are throwing around the term "mindset work" but not telling you WHAT that MEANS or LOOKS LIKE! Let me be specific about what mine looks like so you get an idea of what it looks like for a $35k month:

I focus on ONE GOAL and became laser focused on that one goal.

I wrote the goal down every day— and the goal has a deadline.

>> My morning routine:
1. Wake up, be aware of how I feel.
Listen to Abraham Hicks good morning rampage.
Write down how I want to feel today.
2. Then move on to journaling around my goal. What it would feel like to have achieved the goal, what I would do when it happened, how I would act, and then I close my eyes and visualize myself with the results.
3. Then I listen to Steve Seibold’s positive self talk on self esteem and personal development. I kept myself around high vibe people and things.

>> During the day:
I’m aware of my thoughts and feelings. If something negative comes up, I stop, write it down and journal and tap about it. I also listen to more Abraham Hicks and subliminal messaging music.

>> Before Bed:
I go back to my ‘how I want to feel today’ notes and once again, focus on my goal and the feeling that the result of that goal is going to bring. I journal more, tap if I need to, and end the night in meditation. As I lay down in bed, I start to think about how much I appreciate everything around me: the bed, the air conditioning, the pillows… all of it. And I drift off to sleep with some gentle music.

Hope this helps YOU have a $35k month!!
xo, Emily
